A unique weekend for women to learn or
improve their skills on a wide range of outdoor activities and
sports will take place June 23 and 24 at the Hunting & Fishing
Museum in Tionesta and surrounding woods and lakes. The weekend
will feature informative sessions on a variety of topics from
how to shoot a bow and arrow to giving first aid in the outdoors
(if the first lesson doesn’t go quite as planned).
Here’s a look at the weekend lineup:
Orienteering—Learn how to navigate your way through the woods
using a compass. This is a great course especially for anyone
who’s afraid to walk in the forest or of getting lost.
Bird watching—Learn to identify some of the region’s feathered
friends not only by sight but by song as well.
Tree Identification—Hike in the woods with a guide while
learning to recognize some of the most common plant species
found in Pennsylvania.
Wildlife Tracking—Walk through the woods and learn how to
identify signs left by wild animals. Also find out what
wild-life needs for a healthy habitat.
Shooting A Gun—Get instruction on using a shotgun. The session
will be taught by an expert female shooter, who will help
participants gain the confidence to enjoy the sport. Women who
want to improve their basic shooting skills will also find this
course helpful.
Photography—Learn how to take great nature pictures and gain
some valuable techniques to capture all those Kodak moments.

Nature Arts & Crafts—Gather materials from nature then design
and build something to use in the home or yard. Perhaps a bird bath or house, or
maybe a garden stepping stone.
Archery—Learning how to use a bow and arrow including how to
correctly hold, draw and aim a bow. Expert instructors will be
on hand as well for those who already shoot but want to improve
their skills.
Canoeing—Floating down a beautiful creek or river is one of the
most relaxing and peaceful ways to be in nature. Gain the
confidence and skills to navigate a canoe including basic paddle
strokes, correctly entering and exiting a canoe, and
understanding waterways.
Camping—This class will teach how to pick a camp site, set up a
tent, build a fi re, and provide some quick tips on easy
cooking. It will also help you organize your trip so time can be
spent more on fun activities and less on work.
Fishing—Learn or improve fishing skills including proper
spin-casting techniques and easy knots to use. Plus learn to
identify different species of fish, and some common laws
regarding seasons, sizes, and creel limits. Then go fishing!
Some instruction on fly-fishing will also be offered.
First Aid—This first aid class focuses on safety in the
outdoors. Gain knowledge on how to plan a safe outing, and what
to do if there’s an emergency.
On Saturday evening, participants will gather around a bonfire
on Lighthouse Island. It will be a time to relax and get to know
the women who are sharing this weekend with you. There will be
special entertainment with music and story telling around a
warm, welcoming fire.
The Women @ Home In The Outdoors weekend will be limited to
fifty participants. For more information, contact the Hunting &
Fishing Museum in Tionesta at (814) 755-3256.
